Geo Arbitrage for Expats
What is Geo Arbitrage?

Geographic arbitrage for expats and digital nomads
What is Geo Arbitrage? Geo Arbitrage is the well-known technique used by experienced digital nomads and more sophisticated expats to manage their finances and tax residency in such a way that both yield the best and most efficient results, both practically and financially.
Geo-arbitrage is commonly used by expats and digital entrepreneurs, known as digital nomads. But what exactly does geo-arbitrage involve, and why is it worth it?
How Geo Arbitrage is applied
The basic definition of geo arbitrage is taking advantage of the difference in costs between two geographic locations, despite having the same type of lifestyle.” Geographic arbitrage is essentially making money in a strong currency and spending in a weaker currency. So normally the usual set up of the most experienced expatriates and of all digital nomads attentive to their finances and living costs is:
- Physical Residence in Panama (for reasons of extraterritoriality and corporate tax residence, Zero Tax and territorial taxation, anonymity being tax havens) where companies are incorporated and an anonymous offshore account is opened where cash can be made in American dollars given that the national currency in Panama is the Dollar USA.
- Tax residency in Mexico or Colombia , where you register with AIRE, and you have a transparent and fiscal residency without the burden of proof towards the Italian tax authorities or those of any other European country.
- In Mexico and Colombia the cost of living is up to 4 times lower than in Panama and you spend in Dollars earned in Panama by taking advantage of the monetary arbitrage between the two countries and multiplying your purchasing power many times over when you buy local goods and merchandise priced in the weak local currency (For Mexico MXN , For Colombia COP ). *
- Note: Mexico is more convenient because it has lower inflation rates than Colombia, which is why we do not consider countries like Argentina or Venezuela, because despite the favorable exchange rate they have inflation rates that increase every month by up to +20%.
What to do to start living according to geo arbitrage or geographic arbitrage

All our clients, after a year or two of obtaining residency, especially residency in Panama (or its equivalent in Paraguay), begin to understand that the real advantage of being a resident in Panama (or Paraguay) is precisely geo-arbitrage, that is, living in a country other than Panama or Paraguay where they can practice geographic arbitrage and often also apply other methodologies necessary for financial savings.
That's why, to begin practicing geographic arbitrage, start by taking up residency in Panama, a country with a strong currency but expensive to live in. Meanwhile, begin building your physical residency plan, where you'll live and take up tax residency by registering with AIRE. Our advice: consider Mexico or Colombia.
Geographic arbitrage works by exploiting financial opportunities in multiple locations. For example, a smart person in Milan or Monte Carlo might not want to sell their house and move permanently to Mexico. Instead, they could rent their apartment on Airbnb or put it up for long-term lease.
This way, you could cover a good portion of your expenses in Mexico with the hard currency (euros) you'd use, which comes from passive income where you don't need to work. It's a particularly smart move if you can spend that season in places like Mexico or Colombia, which offer much cheaper accommodations.
The dynamics and examples are endless. It's up to the client to decide. If you'd like to take advantage of geo-arbitrage, contact us.
Origin of Geographic Arbitrage

Geographic arbitrage is a term coined by the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement. FIRE advocates combine investments with a typically well-paying job to achieve the dream of retiring in their 40s or even 30s.
One of their main tactics is to take advantage of local living costs across the country and even the world to keep the cost of living as low as possible, thus extending the value and lifespan of saved/earned money and making early retirement possible.
If you're considering this move for yourself, you may want to work with a financial advisor first to get your finances in order and ensure you're set up for success. Contact one of our financial advisors for expert advice on how, where, and when to relocate, and how to begin your personal geographic arbitrage project and planning.
